Dividing a total bill by the number of friends only works when everyone orders roughly the same thing and joins every round. Real nights out include different prices, skipped rounds, and late arrivals. The rules below keep the split verifiable for the whole group.

The rule is simple: assign drinks to the person who ordered them, assign shared costs only to their users, and record who advanced the payment separately.

Situation 1: a EUR 4.00 beer and EUR 9.00 cocktail total EUR 13.00. An equal split makes both shares EUR 6.50. Per-drink tracking keeps them at EUR 4.00 and EUR 9.00.

Situation 2: anyone who skips a round receives EUR 0.00 for that round. Earlier and later rounds continue to count normally.

Situation 3: a late arrival only participates from the moment they join. Earlier rounds stay with the original group.

Situation 4: when someone leaves early, stop adding them to later rounds. Their existing balance remains without receiving new costs.

Situation 5: split shared costs only among their users. A EUR 24.00 taxi for three friends is EUR 8.00 per user, not EUR 6.00 for a group of four.

Situation 6: who pays and who uses something are different facts. The payer receives credit while costs remain with the people who consumed the drinks or expense.

Full example: Anna, Bas, Cem, and Daan spend EUR 45.00. Their fair shares are EUR 9.00, EUR 12.00, EUR 18.00, and EUR 6.00. Anna pays EUR 20.00 and receives EUR 11.00. Cem pays EUR 25.00 and receives EUR 7.00. Bas pays EUR 12.00 and Daan EUR 6.00.

This is a transparent fictional example. No user data was used and all amounts and transfers reconcile mathematically.

Does every round need to be equal?

No. A round can contain different drinks and participants. Each person only carries their own order and relevant shared costs.

What happens when someone skips a round?

Leave that person out of the participants for that round. Their earlier and later orders still count normally.

How do you split a taxi or locker?

Add the cost separately and select only the friends who used the taxi, locker, or other shared purchase.
